Around 20 YP branches have now held initial meetings. Most or all of these branches cover multiple parliamentary constituencies, and the numbers attending have been underwhelming to say the least. The new branches will have to work hard to find ways of engaging members if they’re to prevent numbers from falling off further.
The CEC is also very slowly beginning to organise other events, hampered again and again by poor communication. The launch on 9th July of its Disability Rights Commission was well attended: the numbers might have been higher but for significant numbers of members not receiving emails. The Commission will be involving disabled members in developing YP policy on disability rights. YP has booked a stall at the Miners’ Gala, at which it will be launching its Trade Union Commission, though members could be forgiven for not being aware of this.
Mel Mullings, Solma Ahmed and Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi
At Monday’s Connections meeting, reps expressed solidarity with Mel, Solma and Naomi, and spoke about the lack of transparent disciplinary processes and the influence of unelected, paid officers within YP. The general view was that we want to see more than just a dropping of charges (which now appears to have happened). Mel, Solma and Naomi deserve an apology, and the CEC must look at itself, and make real changes if it is to win back members’ confidence.
